Editor's Letter...
Issuing a specialised publication is no mean task. This is primarily because of the difficulties encountered in catering for the set of specific requirements demanded by a niche audience.
In our case the concept of an educative business journal must be continuously sold to three different, yet equally demanding stakeholders; the reader, the contributor and the sponsor, all of whom are extremely time-poor and whose attention span has been pre-allocated to other specific sources (many of which are non-printed). Furthermore, wariness inevitably creeps in alongside innovation and for these reasons, we have decided to focus upon a quality product which aims to completely satisfy all the key stakeholders.
The executive class is growing and it cuts across our society. It actively participates in the creation of wealth in our community and has a unique role in leading our economy to a higher, more sophisticated level. The commitment of Malta’s executive class to continue learning and to succeed is reflected by the popularity of evening and distance learning courses. No wonder we have the highest per capita level of MBAs in Europe.
Having said that, the Maltese market for magazines is pretty saturated and marketing budgets are far from growing. Therefore, whilst standing alone with a mission to empower, our journal must nevertheless compete by being different, innovative; in terms of targeted audience, qualitative and relative content and in precision of distribution. Our mission is in fact to be an effective channel which provides the sharpening of business skills of the local executive. This ought to be of high interest to the learning reader who is on a mission of self-improvement, to the contributor who strongly desires to empower and to the selected sponsor whose wares are of particular suitability to the needs and values of this audience.
The advertisers who have supported this publication share our conviction of the untapped potential that existed in this sphere. We thank them for the trust and backing that they have given us and we are confident that they will be well-rewarded.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all our contributors who have made this possible through their appealing and qualified articles. There is a wide spectrum of topics covering such diverse subjects as how to make better use of our thinking capabilities, managing our money, free trade and competitiveness, project and operations management, managing people, language and business, outsourcing ICT, the personality of brands, salesmanship and website management. The styles and focus of each feature reflect the diverse personalities and backgrounds of the contributors themselves.
We have also included an interview with an entrepreneur, John Mallia. His story not only provides interesting reading but hopefully his experience, especially his working through a co-operative, shows that the route towards entrepreneurship can be quite diverse. There is a lot of talk about the need for flat management structures in modern enterprises and this is surely one of the distinctive features of co-operatives.
Make no mistake - ‘The Executive’ is not a giveaway; we are in fact placing a very high value on your readership.. Our journal’s level of success will not be measured solely in terms of sponsorship profitability (though we firmly believe that this will ultimately reflect the quality of the content that we offer) but also in terms of your assessment and feedback. . . Indeed, ultimately, you are our judges.
So please do let us know what you think of the journal and what you would like us to include in future issues. Mapping of studied areas will in fact be continuously influenced by your desires (information about which we will be actively pursuing) and we are already working on the second issue based upon comments and reactions received till now. It promises to build on what you have in hand.
“The Executive” is intended to encourage and to give its small contribution to the on-going advancement of Malta’s executives. We promise to always strive to offer you interesting as well as educational material which you will undoubtedly find beneficial in your place of work and in your studies as well as to better understand the world that we are living in.
